20. Why Rizal resented the exhibition in madrid?

Answer:

 1887 exposition in Madrid

Explanation:

In my mind, I remembered from history, the 1887 Madrid exposition, where Igorots in a so called created village were displayed. The display was done in the Zoological Gardens in Madrid that year where such village with native Igorots, according to an Agustinian friar, represented the actual pre-Hispanic life in the Philippines.

Literature stated that the Igorot village was a central attraction at the exposition in the said garden. It was made to answer the curiosity of the Spaniards. But not to Filipinos in Madrid and Europe during that period, particularly the Filipino propagandists.

One of the propagandists who criticized the event was Dr. Jose Rizal, who was at that time touring Europe with Dr. Maximo Viola after his novel Noli Me Tangere – against abuse of the Spanish friars – was published. He was in Geneva, Switzerland when he heard the news. Rizal said that the exposition “is not consistent with human dignity to be exhibited side by side with animals and plants.” He added in his letter to his friend Dr. Blumentritt that he favored holding an exposition “but not an exhibition of odd individuals, showing our countrymen as a curiosity to entertain the idle inhabitants of Madrid.”

Even the great propagandist Graciano Lopez Jaena called the exhibition as inhuman. There were people who died in the exposition as they were exposed to the cold weather without appropriate shelter, clothing or support.

Regardless of the good intention of the organizers of the event, the discrimination of these indigenous peoples in a foreign land was evidenced in their deplorable condition and being an object for mockery and laughter by the Spaniards and foreigners who attended that exposition.

Due to the grave and deplorable conditions of these Igorots in that Madrid exposition, Rizal uttered: “I would rather that they all got sick and died so they would suffer no more.” These propagandists had tried to raise the inhumanity of the exposition and the banning of the event.

The Madrid exposition was the first but not the last. Because during the American colonial period, they brought Igorots to their land, the so called Saint Louis World Fair. Here the Igorots were also displayed and suffered the same conditions with that of their fellow Igorots in the Madrid exposition.

The discrimination of the Igorots like in these expositions were not much contained in national authored books. These were in fact substantiated in books of Dr. Willian Henry Scott. And these historical events which detailed the discrimination are not well known by the present Igorot youth as they are not contained in their history books. As they are proud of being an Igorot, it is a must for them to know these manifestations of discrimination and serve as a catalysts of correcting these injustices. By that, I would be even prouder of them!
